The Palomar Knot

The Palomar Knot comes close to 100 percent efficiency when tied properly, but you have to use more line to tie it. If you use it in a tapered leader (fly fishing), it shortens the leader more quickly than other knots. Many anglers don't use this knot with lures that have treble hooks, because you have to pass the lure through the line. It proves fast and easy, though, with a single hook or swivel.

STEP 1 Double four to six inches of the tag end back along the standing part, forming a loop. Pass this loop through the eye of the hook or the ring of the swivel,

Step One

STEP 2 Make an Overhand Knot with the loop, as shown.

Step Two

STEP 3 Slip the hook, swivel, or lure through the loop. At the same time, hold the tag end and standing part together in your left hand and pull slowly until the loop clears the lure, hook, or swivel. Moistening the knot helps.

Step Three

STEP 4 Continue pulling the tag end and standing part while holding the lure, hook, or swivel in your right hand until the knot seats securely. Trim the tag end and you're finished.
